The AI search landscape
Why AI search visibility matters and which platforms to monitor
The shift from traditional search
Search is fragmenting. In 2024, people began asking AI assistants questions they used to type into Google. By 2026, AI-powered search is a significant discovery channel for businesses.
This creates a new challenge: your brand needs to appear in AI responses, not just search results.
The platforms
Heading tracks ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overview daily. The rest of the landscape below is profiled for context and not yet on the tracking schedule.
ChatGPT
OpenAI's conversational AI. The largest consumer AI platform. ChatGPT answers questions, recommends products, and cites sources, making it a key visibility channel.
Google AI Overview
Google's AI-generated summaries that appear above traditional search results. These pull from indexed web content and can include your brand as a cited source.
Gemini (not yet tracked)
Google's standalone AI assistant. Used for research, recommendations, and task completion. Citations link to web sources.
Perplexity
An AI-native search engine. Perplexity is the most citation-heavy platform. Nearly every response includes source links. High value for traffic-focused brands.
Claude (not yet tracked)
Anthropic's AI assistant. Strong for in-depth analysis and recommendations. Less citation-heavy than Perplexity but growing as a research tool.
GPT Search (not yet tracked)
OpenAI's web-connected search within ChatGPT. Combines conversational AI with real-time web search results.
Why monitor across platforms?
Different platforms cite different sources for the same query. A brand might appear in Perplexity's response but not ChatGPT's, or vice versa. Monitoring across platforms reveals:
- Where you're strong: which platforms already cite your brand
- Where you're missing: which platforms your competitors appear on but you don't
- Platform trends: how your visibility changes as platforms update their models
